To ensure the health of aquaculture and agriculture environments, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP or REDOX) measurements need to be accurate and concise. The quality of the biological environment is dependent upon accurate ORP measurements. Even the smallest of deviations can indicate a possible increase in pollutants or a decrease in oxygen levels. AlpHa offers robust and accurate oxidation-reduction potential sensors, which are ideal for taking measurements in aquaculture, agriculture, and hydroponics.
Applications of Oxidation-Reduction Potential Sensors in Aquaculture and Agriculture
In fish farming facilities, ORP sensors are utilized to monitor the nitrification reaction status to avoid an ammonia spike that can be deadly to fish or other aquatic life. Additionally in aquarium systems, ORP is associated with the nitrogen cycle to determine baselines and trends.
In soil-based agriculture operations, ORP measurements are used in rinse waters to ensure proper disinfection. Similarly, hydroponics-based agriculture utilizes ORP to determine if aeration and circulation of the hydroponic water is sufficient. Both applications use ORP measurements to determine mitigation strategies including fertilizer and nutrient needs. If soils or hydroponic solutions are outside the target ORP measurement, it can severely affect plant growth, nutrient, and elemental absorption. These challenges can be mitigated with the optimal sensor design, in particular the reference junction design, housing material, and sensing chemistry.
